In The Kind Diet, actress, activist, and committed conservationist Alicia Silverstone shares the insights that encouraged her to swear off meat and dairy forever, and outlines the spectacular benefits of adopting a plant-based diet, from effortless weight loss to clear skin, off-the-chart energy, and smooth digestion. She explains how meat, fish, milk, and cheeseâ€"the very foods we’ve been taught to regard as the cornerstone of good nutritionâ€"are actually the culprits behind escalating rates of disease and the cause of dire, potentially permanent damage to our ecology.

Yet going meat- and dairy-free doesn’t mean suffering deprivation; to the contrary, The Kind D! iet introduces irresistibly delicious food that satisfies on every levelâ€"it even includes amazing desserts to keep the most stubborn sweet tooth happy. Alicia also addresses the nutritional concerns faced by many who are new to a plant-based diet, and shows how to cover every nutritional base, from protein to calcium and beyond.

Alicia knows that changing life-long dietary habits is a process, and that each person progresses at a different pace. For that reason, The Kind Diet encompasses 3 separate levels, from Flirting to Superhero. Flirts learn to dip a toe into the vegan pool, reducing their meat-eating and swapping out a few key foods for plant-based substitutes to see quickly how even small changes can reap big results. Vegans get to experience the life-altering effects of forgoing animal-products entirely, while still enjoying many convenience foods and meat substitutes in addition to the wonderful grains, vegetables and fruits that f! orm the core of that diet. True enlightenment comes with the Superh ero program, based on the principles of macrobiotics and built on a foundation of whole grains, vegetables, and other yummy foods that Alicia describes in detail.

Whether your goal is to drop a few pounds, boost your energy and metabolism, or simply save the world, Alicia provides the encouragement, the information, and the tools you need to make the transition to a plant-based diet deliciously empowering.

A born food-lover, raised in California on “the best Mexican food in the country” and her father’s “traditional Southern soul food,” Alicia C. Simpson couldn’t imagine giving up her favorite dishes to become vegan. Animal-free food might be healthier, but could it match the tastes of homeâ€"like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, or a bowl of chili? Three years after Alicia took the vegan plunge, Quick and Easy Vegan Comfort Food answers that question with a resounding “yes!”

Here is the essential cookbook for an! y of America’s more than 6 million vegans who miss the down-home tastes they remember (or want to try), or for vegetarians and even meat-eaters who want to add more plant-based foods to their diets, but don’t know where to start. Comfort-seeking cooks will find:
  • Easy-to-prepare, animal-free versions of classics like Spicy Buffalo Bites, Ultimate Nachos, Baked Ziti and more
  • 65 delicious combinations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with flavors from around the world, like “Chinese Take-In” or “Tijuana Torpedo”
  • Everything you need to know to start your vegan pantry, and why being vegan is easier, less expensive, and more delicious than you might think.

With spirit and style, Alicia shows just how easyâ€"yes, and comfortingâ€"vegan food can be.

Motherhood revealed-by a high-profile celebrity mom, dynamic CEO, and Dancing with the Stars co-host and winner.

Brooke Burke knows all too well that when you're raising four children, running a household, tending a relationship, building a multimillion- dollar business and pursuing a television career, there's no room for pretense or posturing. Rejecting the idea that there's some simple step-by-step path to the Perfect Body, the Perfect Relationship, or the Perfect Career, she reveals the truths about motherhood with the sincerity that today's smart, sexy and soulful moms need. Brooke lets readers know what really goes on behind the scenes of a surprisingly ordinary life as a ! celebrity mom, and how she manages to make it all work (on the good days). Always acknowledging the chaos that is present in any woman's life, Burke offers readers a more calculated approach to life and motherhood: dance through it. It's all about hearing the music, finding your footing, and moving gracefully.

From tips about caring for your body, to her own stories about the missteps she's made as a mother, to advice about how to handle the tough emotional challenges moms face, Brooke paints an honest picture of motherhood that all women can relate to, insisting that it's not about being right or wrong, it's about being your authentic, naked self.
Amazon Exclusive: Teresa Strasser and Brooke Burke: Author One-on-One

Teresa Strasser is an Emmy-winning writer, radio personality (as Adam Carolla's long-suffering sidekick) and the author of Exploiting My Baby: A Memoir of Pregnancy ! and Childbirth.

Teresa Strasser Teresa: Do you get sick of hearing how amazing you look after having four kids? Do you sometimes just want to roll your eyes and go, "I knooooooow. What else is new?"

Brooke: That's funny. Compliments are too few as a mom, so hell no! I'll take it all! I know our society is obsessed with fitness and I am too, so its ok.

Teresa: Writing a book is kind of like having a baby, strenuous and miserable during delivery but ultimately satisfying. Am I right? Do you feel your brain has stretch marks now?

Brooke: Well said, and yes totally. There were many days when I thought it would never be done. It was very revealing, therapeutic, and insightful. Writing honestly made me dissect many areas of my life. My older kids actually s! aid, "I think you are a better mom since you wrote your book!" I'm not sure if that is good or bad, LOL!

Teresa: Your book is titled The Naked Mom, which made me wonder: what's more uncomfortable, being emotionally naked or literally naked?

Brooke: Ooooh, good one! Well, the first time I posed naked was terrifying, and there haven't been many. But being emotionally vulnerable is harder. People are always ready to judge and criticize, and The Naked Mom reveals parts of me that no one has seen before. I do what I do because I truly believe there is a LOT to learn from sharing with each other, woman to woman. I know that other moms are going through the same things I am, and I am not afraid to admit my most difficult moments and flaws.

Teresa: Which DWTS judge would you like to see naked? And which judge would most appreciate a great read?

Brooke: Bruno, because regardless, he'll make you laugh; he'll! perform for you and he's full of personality to keep you interested! Len would not only appreciate a great read, but I think he'd make a great read. I'd love to hear Len's story.

Brooke Burke Teresa: You sell post-pregnancy belly wraps. Are those made with lavash or tortilla? I'm hungry!

Brooke: Trust me, you wouldn't want to eat your way to the middle! Remember how yucky you felt right after birth, all that extra baggy baby skin! Don't we give enough as mothers--why do they take our bods too! Tauts is a compression garment that helps your tummy get back in shape fast!

Teresa: If I had won the coveted Dancing With the Stars mirror ball trophy and I looked like you, I would stare at the trophy and thus myself all da! y. Where do you keep that thing?

Brooke: No, you wouldn't! It's too painful to remember all the pulled and torn muscles...I keep it in my closet; not hiding, on my vanity. It used to rotate through my girls' rooms. Everyone who visits wants a pic with it, not ME!

Teresa: Did you ever mistake Derek Hough for one of your kids?

Brooke: I used to mother him during rehearsals and pack him a lunch in the am while getting my kids ready. He's actually grown up a LOT since season 7. Even a bit sexy now.

Teresa: You gave your kids really cool names (Neriah, Sierra, Rain and Shaya). Did you review in your head possible ways other kids would make fun of those names, or did you just go for it?

Brooke: I was teased as a kid too. Say Brooke Burke fast and it sounds like a chicken. No, my kids are tough and they will handle that sha! llow stuff.

Teresa: When people! ask you if you are going to have another baby, do you A) throw a Skecher fitness sneaker at their sternum B) seriously consider it because five can't be much harder than four C) tell them you've got a mirror ball trophy to polish or D) tell Bruno to mind his own business?

Brooke: I say "How when where WHY?!?" My real problem is David says YES and he thinks I'm only 27!!!

Q&A with Author Cheryl Burke

What drew you to the world of dance?
As a young child, my mom got me involved in the typical ballet classes that a lot of girls take. When I was a little older, I went with my parents to a ballroom class they were taking and instantly fell in love with the costumes and the music. And I loved that it was partner dancing.

What inspired you to write Dancing Lessons?
Since being on Dancing with the Stars I’ve encountered a lot of people who’ve asked me about my dance background, my training and my childhood. I thought that if I could write a! book that inspires people to take up dance or to find their passion and they can learn from it like I have, then it would be worth it to write a book.

What do you think people can learn about life through dance?
Compromise. Sharing. Teamwork. You can learn to express yourself with your body. Sometimes words fail to really convey emotion, and dance teaches you body language and interpretation.

What is your favorite part of being on Dancing with the Stars?
The best part of being involved in Dancing with the Stars is inspiring people of all ages to get up and dance. When people approach me and say that I’ve motivated them to get off the couch and be more active; to enroll in dance class; or when young kids want to take dance lessons, that’s my inspiration to be part of the show.

If you could offer one piece of advice to your fans, what would you tell them?
Find your pass! ion. Once you do, nothing can stop you.

Dance Tips from Author Cheryl Burke

General Dance Tip
No matter what dance you perform, you should have fun doing it â€" and don’t ever fake it. When I dance, I don’t put on any show faces. Facial expressions are an extension of the body’s expressions and should come from somewhere special and authentic. When you feel the dance and the music, that, in turn dictates how you will emote. People can tell if you’re being artificial.

Salsa Tip
There’s a lot of hip action and body pulsing in the salsa, so quick feet are a must. Women also need good flexibility and the ability to spin fast without getting dizzy.

Quickstep Tip
This is a high-energy dance in which the partners must keep holding on to each other. You have to be light on your feet and move around the floor as a unit. And don’t forget to smile.

Rumba Tip
You n! eed to be flexible, sexy, and sensual with your partner. Focus on good hip action. You move much more slowly than in the salsa, but movement is key.

With its specific focus on Asia, this anthology constitutes an excursion into the realm of transversality, or the state of 'postethnicity,' which, the book argues, has come to characterize the global culture of our times. Hwa Yol Jung brings together prominent contemporary thinkers--including Thich Nhat Hanh, Edward Said, and Judith Butler--to address this fundamental and important aspect of comparative political theory. The book is divided into three p! arts. Part One demythologizes Eurocentrism, deconstructing the privilege of modern Europe as the world's cultural, scientific, religious, and moral capital. Part Two traces the rise of Asian thought and the process of East-West cultural hybridization, while Part Three introduces the concept of the 'global citizen.' Jung's anthology reveals a postmodern multiculturalism whose new philosophical matrix transgresses the existing cultural and intellectual typology to offer new understanding of today's pluralistic world.Tokyo Taxi Poster (11 x 17 Inches - 28cm x 44cm) (2009) Korean Style A reproduction poster print

The Great Queen Seondeok Vol. 1

PATRICIA ARQUETTE 11X14 COLOR PHOTO

  • Description: High Quality real photograph printed on Fuji Paper.
  • Size: 11X14 inches
A young San Francisco widow is swept into a political uprising in Burma after her sister reluctantly drags her on a Southeast Asia tour.Working at the top of his form, John Boorman is a director who can pursue the poetry of his personal obsessions within the framework of a dynamic thriller and not shortchange the film. Beyond Rangoon involves a journey into unfamiliar territory: the rivers, jungles, and war-torn backcountry of Burma in 1988; But it also ventures into the mythic Arthurian terrain of such seemingly disparate films as Excalibur, Point Blank, and Deliverance. This time, uniquely in this director's work, the quester is a woman. American doctor Laura Bowman (Patricia Arquette) regards her life as having ended after the brutal murder of her husband and their little! boy by home invaders. Her sister (Frances McDormand) has persuaded her to come along on a sightseeing tour of Burma. The trip leaves Laura numb until, impulsively venturing into the night alone, she becomes witness to a crisis moment in history: the beginning of the military dictatorship's violent crackdown on the rising democracy movement. The sight of Aung San Suu Kyi, the dissidents' inspirational leader, facing down a wall of armed soldiers with only the power of serene self-possession inspires Laura (an amazing scene--and it really did happen).

But that's only the beginning of Laura’s movement toward enlightenment, and back to life. Beyond Rangoon abounds in memorable encounters--with individuals variously supportive and terrifying, and with locations and situations where hope and catastrophe trade off like valences of the same energy. As critic Kathleen Murphy has noted, "It's as though the fabric of reality shivers like water, racking focus into a new, ! altered pattern of experience." (Case in point: the startling ! image of a car's rear window star-shattered by a pursuer's bullet as Laura drives down an almost nonexistent jungle road--the pursuit car sharply irised in the bullet hole.) Boorman makes us feel the total chaos of a spectacularly beautiful land that is not only at the mercy of a brutal regime but utterly cut off from an outside world that doesn't, can't, know what's happening there. In this, Boorman's movie immeasurably increased awareness of Burma's tragedy, but it hasn't prevented the government of what's now called Myanmar from keeping Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest more than 20 years later. --Richard T. JamesonOverlooked and underrated, "Goodbye Lover" is a tawdry, tasty film noir with a soft spot for its scheming antiheroine. With her platinum Lulu bob, a killer wardrobe, and a "Sound of Music" fetish that inspires her to "climb every mountain" of bad-girl ambition, Patricia Arquette is perfectly cast as Sandra, the sweet but lethal wife of Jake (Dermot Mulroney), ! who works in a top-drawer ad agency with his brother Ben (Don Johnson). Weary stud Ben falls prey to simultaneous affairs with Sandra and his devoted secretary (Mary-Louise Parker), and the cynical Detective Pompano (Ellen DeGeneres) unravels the murder-for-insurance plot while her clueless Mormon partner (Ray McKinnon) tries to keep pace. Combining mordant humor and rampant depravity, this deliciously dark comedy starts fast and never lets up, liberating director Roland Joff?© ("The Killing Fields") from the sobriety of his previous work. The entire cast is great, but it's DeGeneres who makes this a recommended sleeper. This is a relatively painless but forgettable first Date; you probably won't need a second assignation.--Steve WieckingSTARTER WIFE:SEASON 1 - DVD MovieDrawing from her years in Hollywood, Gigi Lavangie Grazer, wife of producer Brian Grazer, penned The Starter Wife, which inspired the limited series that launched this USA Network dramedy. Author Molly Kagan (Will and Grace's Debra Messing) continues to forge a new life for herself after her divorce from Kenny (David Alan Basche, taking over from Ken Jacobson), a studio exec. In between petty battles with the high-powered wives who disdain her less affluent li! festyle and attempts to get back into the publishing game, the designer-clad mom pals around with Joan (Emmy winner Judy Davis), a recovering alcoholic, and Rodney (Chris Diamantopoulos), an interior designer. Her social circle expands when she befriends Liz (Danielle Nicolet), a pathologically possessive pitcher's spouse, and Zach (Hart Bochner), a writing instructor and possible love interest... if only Molly hadn't sworn off men.

So, while Rodney and Joan have affairs with actors--one in the closet, the other in recovery--Molly turns to screenwriting and a possible no-strings fling of her own. Fantasy sequences parodying hits like The Godfather and Body Heat represent her deepest fears. If the show's sole season gets off to a shaky start, it finds its footing once the central trio becomes more fully rounded and relatable Though the rest of the year doesn't hit the same comedic heights as Will and Grace, Messing still comes on like a modern-day Ro! salind Russell and The Starter Wife makes for light and! frothy fun. In their commentary on two episodes, producers Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriot discuss the changes between the series and the miniseries, like the disappearance of Miranda Otto’s Cricket (just as Jacobson joined the cast of House, she joined the short-lived Cashmere Mafia). McGibbon, Parriot, Messing, and Bochner also comment on the 10 fantasy sequences. --Kathleen C. FennessyWhat happens when two people hate each other at first sight? They get married, of course, in "Ned & Stacey," the fast and funny, shotgun marriage-of-convenience sitcom from the producers of "The King of Queens" starring Academy Award nominee Thomas Haden Church (Best Supporting Actor, "Sideways," 2004) and Emmy Award winner Debra Messing ("Will and Grace"). Ned Dorsey (Church) is a pompous advertising executive who needs a wife to get promoted. Stacey Colbert (Messing) is a ditzy freelance writer desperate to move away from her parents. So what happens one week after these s! trangers meet? They become in-name-only newlyweds with a great new job and a terrific view of Central Park. This three-disc DVD set includes all 24 hilarious episodes. Before Debra Messing (Will & Grace) won an Emmy and Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) was nominated for an Oscar, they starred in Ned and Stacey. Although the screwball sitcom only lasted for two seasons, it confirmed that Church (Flying Blind, Wings) deserved the promotion to lead and that Messing (NYPD Blue) was a talent to watch. In the pilot, mutual friends introduce the couple. Those friends are Stacey's sister, Amanda (Nadia Dajani, Flirting With Disaster), and Ned's co-worker, Eric (Greg Germann, Ally McBeal), who just happen to be married. It's dislike at first sight. Ned is a self-satisfied ad exec and Stacey is a free-spirited freelance writer. He needs a wife to advance his career and she can't afford her own apartment, so they embark on a marriag! e of convenience. Except for the (heterosexual) marriage part,! Ned and Stacey provides the blueprint for Will & Grace as the roommates will continue to see other people, and Amanda and Eric will appear as frequently as Karen and Jack. During the first year, the newlyweds will learn a lot about matrimony. In "Portrait of a Marriage," for instance, they'll find that their relationship, unconventional as it is, is actually pretty healthy compared to Ned's colleagues' highly dysfunctional unions. As Ned puts it, theirs is "a marriage minus the love, sex, and intimacy, which...is more real than the real kind." Notable writers include Oscar winners Alan Ball (American Beauty) and Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), while guest stars include Olivia Newton-John ("Reality Check"), Jason Batemen ("Pals"), and Curb Your Enthusiasm's Susie Essman ("Thanksgiving Day Massacre") as Stacey's aunt. Executive producer Michael J. Weithorn would go on to create The King of Queens. --Kathleen C. Fen! nessy

The Blind Side

  • Condition: New

Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) terrorizes her publishing house co-workers with her abrasive, take-no-prisoners management style, especially her overworked assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds). But when Margaret is threatened with deportation to her native Canada because of an immigration technicality, the quick-thinking exec announces that she and Andrew are engaged to be married. Ambitious Andrew agrees to go along with her schemeâ€"if there’s a long-awaited promotion in it for him. Everything is going according to Margaret’s plan, until an overzealous immigration official makes it his business to prove that the couple’s engagement is bogus. To demonstrate her commitment to her new fiancé, Margaret agrees to celebrate the 90th birthday of his colorful grandmother (Betty White) â€" in Ala! ska. The editrix’s type-A ways put her at odds with her eccentric future in-laws with hilarious consequences, until the Paxtons teach Margaret a thing or two about family.

Rom-com favorite Sandra Bullock and the affably charming Ryan Reynolds’s superb chemistry turn The Proposal from otherwise standard romantic-comedy fare to one that is entertaining and sure to garner laughs. Margaret (Sandra Bullock) is a workaholic, tyrannical book editor (reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada) who suddenly finds her career in jeopardy as she faces deportation back to Canada. Her solution is to simply fake an engagement to her unsuspecting assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), who in turn blackmails her for a promotion. However, when Margaret is forced to head to Alaska with Andrew to visit his family in an effort to make their story believable to the deportation officers, they soon realize that their plan may not be so simple after all. The supporting c! ast of Dad (Craig T. Nelson), Mom (Mary Steenburgen), and kook! y Grandm a (Betty White, still a scene-stealer at 87) is great casting that makes for many amusing scenes. Bottom line: witty Reynolds and Bullock are perfect sparring partners for each other and not half bad to look at either. --Lisanne Chastain

Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) knows little about family. Less about football. What the homeless teen knows are the streets and projects of Memphis. Well-to-do Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) knows little about his world. Yet when she and Michael meet, he's found a home. And the Tuohys have found something just as life-changing: a beloved new son and brother. This real-life story of family and of Michael's growth into a blue-chip football star will have you cheering with its mix of g! ridiron action and heartwarming emotion. Share the remarkable ! journey of the college All-American and first-round NFL draft pick who was a winner before he ever stepped onto the playing field. The Blind Side takes the true story of a young man who went from abandonment to success as a pro-football player and treats it with respect. The movie doesn't oversell what is, on the face of it, already compelling. It's almost impossible to describe the plot without sounding painfully inspirational: Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron, Be Kind Rewind), a hulking but gentle African-American teen in Tennessee, gets taken in by a well-to-do white family; the mother, Leigh Anne Touhy (Sandra Bullock), pushes and mothers the boy, who eventually wins a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi. In the wrong hands, this could have been maudlin, manipulative, and condescending. To the credit of writer-director John Lee Hancock, adapting Michael Lewis's acclaimed book, the result is intelligent, genuine, and alternately funny and moving. Leigh A! nne could easily have been grandstanding and virtuous, but Bullock doesn't shy away from her vain and domineering side. The football scenes will be gripping even to non-sports fans because they've been so successfully grounded in Michael's emotional life. The all-around solid cast includes country music star Tim McGraw, pint-sized Jae Head (Hancock), and Kathy Bates as the tutor who guided Michael's academic success. Don't be surprised if you can't keep yourself from watching all the real-life photos of Michael, Leigh Anne, and the rest of the family that are featured in the credits; by the end of the movie, you will care about them all. --Bret Fetzer
